The original meaning of St. Patrick’s Day and how it is celebrated today have pretty much no common ground anymore.  St. Patrick’s day originally started off as a religious holiday to honor Saint Patrick for spreading Catholicism to much of Ireland.  We celebrate this day on March 17th because this was the day of Saint Patrick’s death.

In Ireland it is an official holiday so most businesses are closed.  Here in the US and Canada while it is celebrated heartily it is not a recognized holiday by the government.  It is a great year when St. Patrick’s day falls on a Friday or Saturday so celebrators can recover in peace the next day!

So while St. Patrick’s day started off as a religious holiday now in many places it is just an excuse to welcome the start of Spring.  The use of the color green is not just to acknowledge the color of Ireland but also to represent new life and growth.  By wearing green on St. Patrick’s day it is said you will be lucky for the Spring (ie the Luck of the Irish).

Of course, for many people St. Patrick’s Day is just a fun way to be Irish for the day and drink green beer and have a great time. 

And frankly, there are few accessories more fun than hats.  A St. Patrick’s Day hat can only increase the enjoyment of the day for the wearer.
